I have this book called the Writer’s Block that is full of little jumpstarts to writing or creativity. Today’s is to go through your favourite book and look at its first line and try to describe why that first line does or doesn’t work.
Unfortunately, I don’t seem to have a favourite book anymore. I had them when I was younger, but I generally like everything I read these days, because most of my books are gifts from people who put some thought into it. But I’m not reading that many books.
I still read voraciously, but it’s mostly the news, information, education, entertainment or opinion pieces.
I engage with fiction in the form of comics and audiobooks in the car, for the most part. And if I do read a novel, it’s in ebook form. I’ve kept all my textbooks but my fiction left a box at a time, moving too often in my 20s.
But a book that I would call out as my favourite? Not really. Reading is an information channel now – my imagination seems to be more audio/visual. I don’t feel like my imagination is limited by this transition.
But would you? I dunno.
